Saturday evening was a night of honors, celebrations and so much more. The NAACP Image Awards were held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood with a lot of huge names and awards with Black Panther, Black-ish and Beyoncé all receiving big wins. Anthony Anderson, Black-ish actor, hosted the live premiere on TV One.
The highest honor of the night that everyone looks forward to every year is the Entertainer of the Year award. This years top honor went to Beyoncé, with her beating out her fellow nominees, Chadwick Boseman, LeBron James, Regina King and Ryan Coogler. She made sure her fellow nominees were highly acknowledged by including them in her acceptance speech. “I’m honored to be included among all of you and to be part of a vital, thriving, beautiful community,” she said.
Black Panther won the marquee Outstanding Motion Picture award, while Boseman was awarded the Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture honor and Letitia Wright picked up the Breakthrough Performance award for the Disney/Marvel film for her role as Shuri, T’Challa’s tech genius little sister.
When it came to the television platform, ABC’s Black-Ish led with a win for Outstanding Comedy Series. Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross took home awards for their amazing acting abilities in the show. Power was named Outstanding Drama Series, with Omari Hardwick and Empire star Taraji P. Henson winning numerous awards for acting in the drama series categories.
The NAACP President’s Award for distinguished public service, went to Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter. After taking a shot at President Donald Trump, the notable Hip-Hop honoree dedicated his award to the “beautiful women” in his life, including his grandmother. “I grew up believing I could do anything, that I could accomplish anything because of those strong women in my house,” he said.
