Daniel Kaluuya Returns to the Big Screen in Lena Waithe’s New Film Queen and Slim.
Lena Waithe, writer and producer for The Chi, and two-time Grammy winning director Melina Matsouka are teaming up (finally) to bring another heart stopping, black fist raising, gut wrenching movie to theatres.
Based on an original idea by author James Frey, Waithe has modernized the classic “Bonnie and Clyde” storyline for a culture that seems to finally be waking up to the tensions that have always existed between police and Black Americans. Performing across from new-to-us Jodie Turner-Smith, Daniel Kaluuya (Black Panther, Get Out) stops hearts in the trailer depicting a first date gone horribly wrong. Waithe says that the film is meant to join other efforts in “protest art”.
“It’s meant to get people talking,” Waithe said. “The film is not made to give the audience answers, but instead to ask questions and show what it looks like to be black and in love while the world is burning all around you.”
Queen and Slim is slated to hit theatres November 27, 2019.
